At a press conference held by the Guiyang municipal people's government on Aug 20, it was announced that since being selected in 2022 as a pilot city for China's national "zero-waste city" initiative, Guiyang has advanced construction across five key sectors – industry, agriculture, construction, daily life, and culture – with steady progress on 45 indicators.
In industry, Guiyang has built 81 national and provincial-level green factories, 21 green supply chains, and 19 green mines. Landmark projects include a 150,000-metric-ton recycled aluminum facility, the Qingzhen Recycling Industrial Park, and a phosphogypsum ecological restoration project that reused 1.6 million tons of waste, restoring 46,000 cubic meters of land and greening 12,600 square meters.
In agriculture, Guiyang has developed a mountain-based circular model, raising straw utilization to 91.11 percent and livestock waste recycling above 85 percent.
The construction sector reached a 40 percent recycling rate for building waste, while green buildings account for 99.3 percent of new projects and prefabricated structures 41 percent.
Guiyang has also pioneered a full-process waste classification model for daily life, achieving zero landfill for household waste and operating 21 sorting centers and three incineration plants. Recycling rates have risen to 38.76 percent.
More than 100 campaigns in culture promoting "zero-waste city" initiative were held, with 635 "zero-waste units" such as zero-waste factories established.
