Over the past 75 years, Guiyang's environment has dramatically transformed. The city's 8,034 square kilometers now boast beautiful landscapes, clear waters, and lush mountains, showcasing a harmonious blend of nature's beauty.
Embracing greener future
Walking through Guiyang's streets, one can see clear skies and feel the fresh breeze. In the first half of this year, the city's air quality reached an impressive 99.5 percent of excellent days, ranking third among 168 major cities in China. This fresh air is a direct benefit of ongoing environmental initiatives.
According to national standards, good ambient air quality refers to an air pollution index greater than 50 and less than or equal to 100.
In the 1980s, Guiyang faced severe air pollution and was one of China's top three acid rain cities. By adjusting its fuel structure and relocating industrial sites, Guiyang reversed this trend, shedding its acid rain label by the early 2000s. Since then, targeted environmental measures have focused on improving air quality through advanced technologies like laser radar and meteorological models, ensuring the city continues to enjoy blue skies.
Guiyang has also arranged for officials and residents to inspect and govern water quality, which ensures proper waterway management. This initiative has improved the conditions of rivers such as the Nanming River, attracting the return of indigenous fish species that thrive in clean water.
Guiyang's commitment to building a zero-waste city has further bolstered its ecological efforts. The city has effectively managed solid waste and maintained a 100 percent disposal rate for industrial and medical waste, strengthening its green foundation.

Driving green economy sustainable growth
As a natural gem on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Guiyang has increasingly integrated green growth into its economic strategy. By prioritizing ecological development, the city has successfully developed digital industries, tourism, and healthcare, turning natural beauty into economic strength.
Guiyang has established green factories and industrial parks that promote sustainability. It has also embraced carbon trading, signing multiple carbon deals to monetize its ecological assets, boosting the economy and the environment.
Green future for all
The city's efforts have enhanced the natural environment and improved residents' quality of life. Initiatives such as the Eco Forum Global Guiyang, which began in 2009, have positioned Guiyang as a leader in ecological development, setting an example for cities worldwide.
Guiyang's commitment to sustainable development, rooted in preserving and enhancing its green assets, continues to create a harmonious balance between growth and nature, ensuring a thriving future for the city and its people.
