Guiyang City and Gui'an New Area – located in Southwest China's Guizhou province – signed an agreement on May 17 with Anshun city, also in the region, to jointly improve the water ecosystem of the Maotiao River Basin.

The Maotiao River flows from south to north through the Pingba district in Anshun city and Qingzhen city and through Guanshanhu district, Baiyun district and Xiuwen county in Guiyang city.

The Maotiao River's main waterway has seen the construction of seven cascade hydropower stations: Hongfeng, Baihua, Liguan, Xiuwen, Zhaixiangkou, Honglin and Hongyan. It is one of the earliest medium-sized rivers in China to be fully developed in a cascade configuration of this kind.

Indeed, the completion of the Hongfeng and Baihua hydropower stations resulted in the creation of Hongfeng Lake and Baihua Lake, which are now important water sources for Guiyang.

To better improve the protection and supervision of the Maotiao River, the local governments of Guiyang, Anshun and Gui'an New Area have issued documents to fully undertake its joint management.

The initiative aims to enhance the water ecosystem and environment quality of the Maotiao River Basin.

Both parties will establish a joint inspection system and a collaborative management mechanism to achieve river information sharing and to intensify the control and protection of the Maotiao River.
