24 residents to serve as river protection volunteers

A total of 24 residents in Guiyang who are enthusiastic about river protection were hired by Guiyang and Guian New Area as folk river chiefs on May 21.

The appointment mechanism has been in place since 2020. Folk river chiefs are volunteers responsible for river and lake management. After being appointed, they will conduct regular inspection of river channels at least once a month to monitor illegal activities such as direct discharges of sewage and obstruction of flood flows.

This event aims to strengthen the general public's ideological awareness of river and lake protection, and form a healthy atmosphere for society as a whole to care for, support, participate in, and protect rivers and lakes.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the folk river chiefs in Guiyang and Guian carried out 228 volunteer activities for river patrol and protection, mobilizing 1,383 residents to participate in the volunteer service and ending up with 1,674 kilograms of garbage collected.

The service involved 47 rivers and lakes in Guiyang and Guian, including Nanming River, Xiaohuang River, Wujiang River and Maotiao River, and helped solve 66 problems.

In addition, river chiefs also played a leading role in carrying out promotional events for rivers and lakes, and introduced the river chief system into schools and communities.
