Guiyang city has found a way to economically benefit from turning sewage into recycled water by utilizing the 38 reclaimed water plants found throughout its urban area.

Since 2016, Guiyang has launched comprehensive measures to improve the water in the main stream and five tributaries of the Nanming River with 16 new and five renovated reclaimed water plants.

"In the past, the Nanming River was dry in winter, but now we can see not just water, but clean water, which proves that Guiyang's urban environment is getting better!" said Xiong Lijuan, a Guiyang resident who enjoys walking along the river bank.

In addition to replenishing rivers and lakes with recycled water, the water plants in Guiyang are also actively trying to innovate the utilization of reclaimed water as it is a valuable resource.

The Longdongbao Regenerated Water Plant in Guiyang has built a set of sewage source heat recovery systems to extract energy from sewage. This energy will be used for heating in winter and cooling in summer in business areas, fully reflecting the green and low-carbon concept.

Additionally, these reclaimed water plants have not only a high ecological value, but can also be used in the tourism and education sectors.

The Qingshan Renewable Water Plant, located on the bank of the Nanming River, is a permanent site for the Eco Forum Global: Guiyang conferences. Above this water plant is a park and the Guiyang Water Environment Science Museum.
