Waste classification can not only effectively promote recycling, but also significantly reduce the pollution of soil, water and air caused by waste treatment.
It can be said that not classifying waste increases the difficulty of garbage disposal, and causes damage to the environment in many ways.
Landfills were the main waste disposal method in China in the past. Plastic waste does not degrade easily, and it affects the texture and structure of soil. Toxic components such as heavy metals lead to excessive pollutants in agricultural products. There are few effective treatment measures for when pollution from landfills mixes with groundwater.
In March 2017, Guiyang was listed as one of the 46 key national cities for waste classification. After five years of research, Guiyang has achieved remarkable results. However, this did not stop the government from improving and developing better waste classification methods.
In November 2018, Guiyang implemented several measures for the classified management of urban domestic waste, which did improve waste systems to an extent. However, with the acceleration of urbanization and the continuous increase in population, the production and treatment of domestic waste continue to grow, and waste classification is facing greater challenges.
In August 2022, Guiyang strategized and implemented more regulations on the classified management of urban domestic waste, which is solving the problem.
