Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province, has in recent years been taking measures to tackle water pollution and improve the water quality of its 219-kilometer mother river Nanming River.
The city has invested about 7.9 billion yuan ($1.24 billion) into the building of 20 recycled water factories over the past four years, raising its sewage treatment capacity from 990,000 metric tons per day to 1.84 million tons and completely satisfying the city's sewage treatment needs.
A total of 15 monitoring sections have been added along the river's main stream and branches since 2018 to monitor its water quality every week, and 14 water quality auto-monitoring stations have been established to carry out real-time monitoring. An all-procedure information platform was also launched to regulate the remediation of sewage draining exits.
Problems such as sedimentation of waterways and dark and smelly water have already been solved, and the river's self-cleaning capacity has been strengthened. The water quality has been improved as well, and the natural landscape along the river has been restored.
Nearly 10,000 volunteers and locals contribute to the protection of the Nanming River every year by monitoring its water quality and reporting problems to related departments via channels such as the hotline 12369.
The city will make water pollution prevention and control a long-term mission, and the management of sewage treatment plants along the river will be strengthened. The river chief system and the ecological compensation mechanism will be implemented and the environmental law enforcement will be enhanced along the river as well.
