Wudang district in Guiyang – capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province – is understood to have completed the water quality treatment of the Songxi and Huanxi rivers.
It was reported that after careful monitoring, the water quality of the two rivers was found to have reached the required environmental standards in May 2021.
The Songxi River originates from Peixi village in the Xinguanglu sub-district in Wudang. It is 10.9 kilometers long and has a drainage area of 44.5 square kilometers.
The Huanxi River originates from Beiya village in the Xinguanglu sub-district in Wudang. The river is 5.55 km long and has a drainage area of 5.32 sq km.
In 2020, the water quality of Huanxi River dropped to grade V, while sewage interception ditches were identified in some sections of the two rivers.
To create a clean, clear and healthy environment, Wudang began to carry out comprehensive treatment of the sewage discharges along the rivers and implement regular water quality monitoring.
In the treatment of the inflowing effluent, the district inspected the sewage discharges from construction sites, community businesses and car washes – so as to prevent private emissions and direct discharges into the rivers.
To control pollution from road surfaces caused by the overflow of urban domestic sewage and prevent the direct flow of effluent into the tributary of the Nanming River, the district cleared out blocked sewage pipelines along Shiyan Road.
In addition, Wudang has beefed up its supervision of car washes along the rivers, requiring their outflows to be filtered before being discharged into the sewage pipe network.
Overall, the sewage collection pipe network and sewage treatment facilities are now being regularly cleared and maintained to ensure unobstructed drainage and that water quality remains up to standard.
At present, the rivers are reportedly clear, while the surrounding environment has been greatly improved.
