The comprehensive cleanup of the Yangming River in Xiuwen county – administered by Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province – recently neared its end and the results are reportedly overwhelming.

Gone is the floating trash, overgrown weeds, sewage ditches and inaccessible banks – to be replaced by crystal-clear water, wildlife and a rejuvenated surrounding green area that allows for community leisure activities.

With an investment of 664.93 million yuan ($103.13 million), the project included the total treatment of 6.2 kilometers of river course.

The construction work involved urban flood control and river treatment projects, water storage dams and water and soil conservation. There was also environmental protection management, widespread greening, installing of garden roads, lighting, and water supply and drainage projects on both sides of the river.

Now, the widened river channels reportedly contrast with the lush vegetation and idyllic environment.

Xiuwen county not only has the renowned cultural spots, but also abundant water resources. Three rivers – the Yangming, Waguanyao and Chuanshanyan rivers – flow through it, lending it charm and vitality.
