Guiyang municipal ecology and environment bureau – based in Guiyang, capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province – is acting to make sure its plans to protect and restore the environment are implemented and complied with.

In a bid to outline and ensure the correct collection, storage, transfer and treatment of waste lead-acid storage battery and engine oil, the bureau held a meeting on June 22 for government departments and interested companies detailing its three-year action plan.

The meeting tabled reports on previous work processes and illegal behavior.

It also undertook training of personnel from district governments – as well as from the departments of transportation, market supervision, public security and commerce.

To help ensure efficient monitoring of waste, Guiyang also staged operations demonstrations and training on the day.

According to the meeting, hazardous waste – including waste lead-acid storage battery and engine oil – needs to be registered and handled in a standard manner.

Local authorities are also required to circulate their safety management rules and protocols to the general public.

In addition, government departments need to coordinate to carry out a serious crackdown on prohibited behavior, such as the illegal storage and transfer of waste and lead batteries. Those found to have committed such illicit acts shall be summoned to judicial organs and face due criminal sanctions, according to the law.

In addition, the range of methods for monitoring and checking waste will be appraised in the year-end assessment, so that the remedial work will achieve more substantive and consistent results.
