The district of Guanshanhu in Guiyang – capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province – was invited to give a presentation to a provincial news conference on biodiversity conservation and development that was held on May 21.

The media was briefed on Guanshanhu's continued efforts in recent years – including rolling out a series of measures – in developing itself as a so-called ecological civilization, as well as on its conservation of biodiversity.

The push by cities in China to be an ecological civilization is part of a national program to, among other things, pursue the path of sustainable development while protecting the environment. Some leading environmentalists say China has committed itself a sustainable development path and has taken the lead in global ecological civilization efforts.

For its part, Guanshanhu has drafted targeted and special plans, such as surveying its resources of biological species. It has included biodiversity protection in the municipal work plan, establishing local species banks, carrying out dynamic monitoring and undertaking training of members of the public.

At the same time, strict law enforcement actions have been carried out by various departments against any action that destroys or threatens wetlands and biological resources.

Real-time environmental checks have also helped the development and the conservation of biodiversity.

As a result, Guanshanhu was listed in the first group of national ecological civilization construction demonstration zones in 2017. It was subsequently included in the fourth batch of ecological practice and innovation bases in 2020.
