Xiuwen county in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, is making moves to further improve and upgrade its urban appearance, in order to make an aesthetic contribution to the city's wider development.

Adapting measures to suit local conditions, the county plans to upgrade and transform 15 backstreets and alleys in its urban area.

At present, five sections of road have been upgraded and reconstructed, while Bailong Avenue has completed 65 percent of its total renovation project. Elsewhere, the revamp of other backstreets and alleys are reportedly making good progress.

In the current year, more than 3.3 million yuan ($508,396.24) in funding has been secured to refurbish garbage sorting collection points, as well as to install 2,730 collection facilities for recyclable and hazardous garbage and add 13 garbage collection vehicles. In the year to date, more than 830 metric tons of domestic garbage has been collected and transported.

Xiuwen has also raised awareness about garbage classification with the general public through a publicity campaign and has guided residents on how to sort their own different types of domestic refuse. So far, more than 80 garbage classification promotion activities have been carried out and more than 40,000 informational leaflets have been distributed.

In addition, the county has organized five work groups to conduct daily inspections of urban street conditions, to maintain a healthy environment for living and working.

Since 2021, more than 10 unsightly and untidy urban corners have been cleaned up, over 40 areas have had unauthorized outdoor advertising removed and users of 26 shared electric bicycles have been punished for indiscriminate parking.
