Beijing News (bjnews), a Beijing-based comprehensive urban daily newspaper, published an article on Nov 23 to praise the ecological treatment of Nanming district, in the capital city Guiyang of Southwest China's Guizhou province.
Bjnews vividly compared Nanming River to Cheonggyecheon, a well-known and well-preserved stream in Seoul, South Korea, for their similarly clear waters.
The report offers a range of proof supporting the remarkable results in the ecological treatment of Nanming, including more than 600 exchange group visits, governance and management system cooperation and two national-level water reclamation plants.
Guiyang has invested a total of 7.59 billion yuan ($1.16 billion) into 18 local water reclamation plants along the river banks.
With a buried depth of 32 meters, the Liuguangmen water reclamation plant has won praise as the deepest fully-buried water treatment plant in Asia and as the first water reclamation plant to be connected with commercial complexes in China since it began operations in June.
It is considered a sterling example of how sewage treatment can be completed through technological advancements such as digital sensors.
Also, Guiyang Science Popularization Environment Park, which opened in 2015, has attracted more than 600 groups from governmental departments, universities and scientific research institutions – accounting for tens of thousands of visitors.
Guiyang has also designed a long-term governance and management system for clear waters: Water pollution and prevention have been included in annual assessments of governmental departments, and fines will be issued to departments that fail to meet water-quality protection standards.
A total of 15 dynamic water-quality monitors are operating on the river's main streams and tributaries, and residents have access to sewage outfall data by scanning QR codes.
