A joint emergency drill was staged on Oct 20 near Jing'an Avenue in Guian New Area of Southwest China's Guizhou province.

The drill was organized by the department of ecology and environment of Guizhou province, Guiyang's municipal government and the management committee of Guian New Area.

About 300 people from various environmental protection bureaus in Guizhou joined the drill. Relevant government departments from other neighboring areas like Chongqing, Sichuan and Yunnan also participated.

The drill focused on a hypothetical break in a gasoline pipeline due to illegal construction work. It required participating departments to deal with water and air pollution caused by leaking gasoline.

The drill aimed to further implement the emergency response law and the new national contingency plan for environmental emergencies and achieve the flexible mobilization of multiple departments within the shortest period.

Local authorities staged a live-combat drill and simulated desktop maneuvers to deal with various emergencies concerning its five-step emergency response plan.

Leaders who participated in the drill said that the exercise helped improve emergency response procedures and advanced environmental safety preparedness across the province.
