Xiuwen county in Guiyang, capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has increased funding to enhance environmental protection, according to the local government on Aug 17.

A total of 5.52 million yuan ($799,373.25), once earmarked for rural environmental renovation projects, has been combined with another 4.5 million yuan to construct rural sewage treatment facilities that will benefit 19 local villages. The investment will improve water use efficiency and reconcile local supply and demand issues.

Officials in Xiuwen are also aiming to tackle air pollution and have secured 1.5 million yuan in special funding from the central government to build a system that captures pollution from industrial furnaces and vehicles.

Local enterprises are also getting into the eco-spirit, with some companies committing to environmental cleanup and deactivating gas generators fewer than 3 meters in height.

Improving the quality of centralized drinking water sources in Xiuwen is also a priority. The central government has pledged 3 million yuan in funding to enhance water source protection at Yanying Mountain before the end of the year.
