Environmental quality continues to improve in Guiyang in 2019

Environmental quality in Guiyang, the capital city of Guizhou province in Southwest China, continued to improve in 2019, according to a bulletin released by the Guiyang bureau of ecology and environment on June 4.

As Guiyang has intensified efforts to prevent and control pollution through a series of measures, including risk management and new infrastructure, it saw visible and stable progress in improving environmental quality throughout last year, an official report showed on Thursday.

In 2019, the number of good air quality days in Guiyang totaled 358, or 98.1 percent of the total. Air quality has ranked top since 2013, the year a national action plan was issued by the State Council to fight air pollution. Throughout the year, Guiyang only saw seven days of light air pollution, and no days of medium air pollution or worse. Guiyang ranked fourth among 168 major Chinese cities subject to air quality monitoring.

In addition, water quality continues to be improved year by year. In 2019, Guiyang monitored concentrated drinking water source areas, as well as 16 sections of rivers, with water quality both rated 100 percent. At the same time, the mean value of noise in the central urban areas of Guiyang remained 56.1 decibels during the daytime, while the road traffic noise was 69.8 decibels. Both met the national assessment standard.

Guiyang also properly dealt with relevant environmental emergencies last year. A total of over 15,000 law enforcement officials implemented inspections of more than 7,400 enterprises. Also, Guiyang has enhanced the persistent management of environmental risks, concerning 122 risk sources, to safeguard the ecological environment. A total of five general emergencies were handled first time, accompanied by no major accidents throughout the year.
