A senior official from Guiyang, the capital city of southwest China's Guizhou province, pledged that the city will attach great importance to environmental conservation and take measures to regulate the siting of local outfalls for pollution discharges into the Yangtze River.

Wang Chun, vice mayor of the city and head of the Guiyang Leading Group for Examining the Distribution of Sewage Outlets along the Yangtze River, made the remark at the parallel venue of a video conference held by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment(MEE) in Beijing on Sept 17.

The conference marked the official launch of a national campaign aimed at intensifying cross-regional efforts to check the outfalls for pollution discharges into the Yangtze River, ensuring the water quality and eco-environmental safety of the Yangtze River, and securing success in the battle for the river's environmental restoration.

Speaking at the video conference, Zhai Qing, vice-minister of the Ecology and Environment, stressed that relevant provincial regions should give priority to the work, fulfill their responsibilities, and take specific measures to ensure eco-environmental security in the parts of the Yangtze River under their jurisdiction.

Wang said in his speech that Guiyang has been formulating plans, allocating sufficient funds and necessary facilities, and taking advantage of the latest technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles and satellite remote sensing since this August in a move to better perform its responsibilities in the eco-environmental restoration of the Yangtze River.

He went on to say that the city will work closely with the MEE in confirming accurate numbers of sewage outlets along the Wujiang River, a tributary of the Yangtze, trace the source of pollution discharge, and complete ensuing rectification work in the national campaign.

Those present at the parallel conference in Guiyang included officials from the MEE inspection team, Yang Bo, Party chief and director-general of the Guiyang Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment, and governmental employees assigned to work on eco-environmental restoration of the Yangtze River.
